The internet of things (IoT), is interrelation of several computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects that are provided with unique identifiers (UIDs) and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.
Quantumsoftech is a renowned company which offers IoT app development services to its clients worldwide. Increasingly, every industry is using IoT to make their operations more efficient in order to understand the customers, improve decision-making and increase the value of the business.
IoT has evolved from the infusion of wireless technologies, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), microservices and the internet. The unification has helped to bifurcate the understanding of operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT), which enables unstructured machine-generated data which is analyzed for insights to bring out some improvements.
Origin of Internet of Things (IoT)
Kevin Ashton, the co-founder of the Auto-ID Center at MIT, first propounded the concept of the internet of things in a presentation that he delivered to Procter & Gamble (P&G) in 1999 A.D. Wanting to bring radio frequency ID (RFID) to the attention of P&G’s senior management, Ashton called his presentation “Internet of Things” to incorporate the new trend of 1999 A.D. “the internet”.
Although Ashton’s was the first mention of the internet of things, the idea of connected devices has been around since the 1970s, under the monikers embedded Internet and pervasive computing. The first internet appliance, for example, was a Coke machine at Carnegie Mellon University in the early 1980s. Using the web, programmers could check the status of the machine and determine whether there would be a cold drink awaiting them, should they decide to make the trip to the machine. However, it didn’t really come into its own until the middle of 2010 A.D. when the government of China said it would make IoT a strategic priority in its five-year plan.
How do IoT devices work?
An IoT system is combined with web-enabled smart devices that use embedded processors, sensors and communication hardware to collect the necessary information from the environment.
In order to operate, they share the sensor data by connecting to an IoT gateway where data is either sent to the cloud to be analyzed or analyzed locally. Sometimes, these devices communicate with other related devices and act on the information they get from one another.
Although people interact with the devices to set them up, give them instructions or access the data But, most of the work is one by devices itself without human intervention.
How the Internet of Things (IoT) is helping?
As of now, we know what IoT is and how does it function. IoT has been evolving by the time due to the benefits it derives. IoT encourages companies to rethink the new ways they approach their businesses, industries and gives them the tools to improve their business strategies.
Monitors overall business process
Enhanced customer experience
Save time and money
Employee productivity is increased
Integrates and adapts to business models
Allows to make an effective decision
Generate more revenue
